What to eat in Kuching — a halal-friendly food guide

Kuching might be Malaysia's most underrated food city. Here's what to hunt down between your Bako trip and your sunset at Damai — every pick here is halal-friendly, and every one is easier with your own car.

1. Sarawak laksa HALAL

The one dish you cannot leave without trying. Sarawak laksa is nothing like the laksa across the South China Sea — a broth built on sambal belacan, coconut milk and a secret paste, loaded with prawns, shredded chicken and bean sprouts, finished with calamansi. Anthony Bourdain famously called it "breakfast of the gods."

Where: almost every kopitiam does a version at breakfast. Ask our team at pickup — we argue about the best bowl weekly, and the answer changes with our mood.

2. Kolo mee ayam HALAL

Springy noodles tossed in shallot oil, topped with minced or roast chicken in the halal version — simple, fast, and dangerously repeatable. It's the everyday breakfast of Kuching, usually under RM10 with a drink.

3. Midin — the jungle fern HALAL

You won't find this outside Borneo. Midin is a wild jungle fern, stir-fried with garlic or belacan until it's crunchy and glossy. Order it at any seafood restaurant or Malay eatery as your vegetable side — it beats kangkung every single time.

4. Umai HALAL

Sarawak's answer to ceviche — fresh raw fish cured in calamansi juice, chilli, and shallots. A Melanau specialty from the coast. Light, sharp, perfect in this climate.

5. Satay & the open-air markets HALAL

Evening food in Kuching means open-air markets: chicken and beef satay over charcoal, grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf, ABC specials for the heat. The Satok Weekend Market on Saturdays is the big one — go hungry, leave happy.

6. Kek lapis Sarawak HALAL

The famous thousand-layer cake, baked one thin layer at a time in patterns that look impossible. The shops along the Waterfront and in Kampung Boyan let you taste before you buy. It survives the flight home beautifully — buy more than you think you need.

7. Teh C peng special HALAL

Three layers — gula apong palm sugar at the bottom, evaporated milk, then tea over ice. Kuching's signature drink and the correct answer to 35°C weather, every single time.

Why you'll want a car for all this

Kuching's best food is scattered — the laksa place is never near the satay place, and the good kek lapis shop is across the river. Grab works, but waiting 15 minutes between every meal stop adds up fast. With your own car you eat where the locals eat, not where the algorithm sends you.

Eat like a local. Drive like one too.
